We found two preying (or is it praying?) mantis to We found two preying (or is it praying?) mantis today. The second one was on Ranger Maddie's shoulder (picture not shown here—maybe check the page of @nwdcco or on FB). That's the same one shown in this video of me moving the mantis off of her shoulder. Don't worry! No mantis were harmed by us today. I didn't get it in the video, but after I stopped recording the mantis groomed itself a bit (a sign of comfort) and then I gently placed it back on a shrub near where Ranger Maddie found it. Sorry for the brief audio cutout at about 1.5 seconds into the video. I took that out to keep a student anonymous.

The beauty and excitement of finding not one but t The beauty and excitement of finding not one but two baby mantis on our wild edible (and nutritious) lambs quarters aka quelites. Only one mantis pictured here. More than one exists in out main garden patch. I need to thin out the quelites to make way for other crops (like squash), but I'm going to do so slowly as not to wipe out their habitat. I'm so grateful to find these little predators in our garden because there's abundance of their prey such as grasshoppers already in our garden also. We have an ecosystem!
